Vanessa Stockard is best known for her contemporary figurative paintings that mimic famous artworks from Western art history; each incorporates a small, cheeky portrait of her cat, Kevin. Working in a Rembrandtesque style, Stockard has replicated paintings by Velázquez, Vermeer, van Eyck, and other masters from the canon. A BFA grad of the University of New South Wales College of Fine Arts, Stockard has exhibited internationally as well as in her native Australia. She is a 2010 recipient of the biennial Stanthorpe Art Prize, awarded by the Stanthorpe Regional Art Gallery. While her art-historical copies have achieved the greatest attention due to their technical skill and humor, Stockard depicts a wide array of subjects in her oil paintings, each rendered with loose brushwork. These include still lifes and self-portraits, though her black feline makes frequent appearances throughout her portfolio.
